U.S. History and Government
Overview:
United States History is a course designed to dig a little deeper into American History. Using primary and secondary sources, maps, political cartoons, and visual learning aids (such as videos or the Internet), the student will better understand historical concepts and events. This course covers U.S. History from native peoples to the present. Your understanding of the past will help you to make sense of the country in which we live today, and to be an informed citizen in issues past and present.
Curriculum:
In this course, we begin with the colonization of the North American continent, along with the natives who already lived here. We discuss the colonial era, moving into the Revolution and our first government. We then cover the Constitution, the first presidencies, and manifest destiny. We will look at the Civil War and Reconstruction, and then the changing American lifestyle of the late 19th century including new immigrants, urbanization, and industrialization. After that, we will examine the imperial era, leading up the World Wars and then the Cold War. Finally, we will look at various 20th century movements and the US today. In addition to these particular eras, we will examine landmark Supreme Court decisions and other assorted goodies.
There is a Regents at the end of this course, so we focus on learning the material and mastering Regents-style multiple-choice questions. In addition, it is very important that students learn how to write a good essay, so we do that frequently. Writing DBQs prepares students for research papers in college, thus their importance is HUGE!! Mastering these skills is imperative to surviving college and university life.
What we are currently studying: Native Americans & European Colonization
Upcoming assignments and projects: TBA
